Since 2014, the Global Midwest Alliance has hosted an annual conference focused on corporate venturing in the Midwest. Centrepolis is on a mission to fuel the growth of Southeast Michigan's small manufacturers and hardware entrepreneurs. They offer hardtech startups and small-to-medium-sized manufacturers access to product development services and tailored funding solutions, with a strong commitment to supply chain resiliency. Just this past February, Centrepolis secured $6 million for their Defense Hardtech Accelerator to bolster Michigan's defense industrial base and reduce reliance on foreign-sourced materials, made possible through a CRADA with the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center.

Richard Phamdo, Founder and CEO, Voltaic Marine
Voltaic Marine is a Traverse City, Michigan-based startup that designs and builds high-performance electric boat platforms for recreational, commercial, and defense applications. Its flagship model, the AEW24, is a 24-foot aluminum-hulled electric watersports boat with an 8.5-foot beam, an 18-person capacity, and a towable weight under 10,000 pounds, built around a proprietary electric propulsion architecture combining high-output electric motors and large-format battery packs. The company debuted the boat at CES 2026 and is partnering with Detroit-based manufacturer Detroit Manufacturing Systems and its Kinetyc division to ramp up full-scale commercial production.
Michael Van Steenburg, Founder and CEO, Modal Motors
Modal Motors is a Michigan-based startup that designs and manufactures next-generation electric motors engineered for high torque density, simplified assembly, and scalability in the United States. Its key differentiator is a patent-pending Transverse Flux Motor architecture that uses ferrite, FeN, and SmFeN materials instead of traditional rare-earth magnets, aiming to outperform Chinese rare-earth incumbents on torque density, efficiency, and mass. The company, spun out of Veolectra Inc., raised $2 million in seed funding to move from R&D and prototyping into full-scale US manufacturing, targeting applications like EVs, drones, and industrial robotics.
Amrit Vivekanand, CEO, Marel Power Solutions
Marel Power Solutions is a Plymouth, Michigan-based company that builds ultra-compact power conversion blocks — power modules and power stacks — for 800V and beyond, targeting mobility, defense, and data center applications. Its core innovation is integrating semiconductor packaging and cooling directly into the power stack, cutting size and weight by 50% and semiconductor count by a third while remaining compatible with silicon and silicon carbide today (with gallium nitride planned next). The company has earned several industry accolades and grants, including a DOE SBIR grant and recognition as a Best Growth Stage Company in 2025.
